ABOUT RITA SANTOS · FOUNDER OF THE OWNER METHOD™
The owner method founder story: how I became my clinic’s busiest employee
I know what it feels like to build something successful and still wonder whether the price of that success is too high.
The Owner Method™ was built from the years, mistakes and hard decisions it took to turn my own clinics into businesses that could grow without depending on me for every task, decision and problem.
Nurse. Clinic owner. Method builder.
CHAPTER 01 · THE DREAM
I was working as a nurse in Norway. The salary was never extraordinary, but the job gave me something I did not fully appreciate until I left: certainty. My salary arrived every month. I had paid holidays, benefits and a pension being built for the future. If I needed a loan, the bank saw a public-sector employee with a secure income. But that certainty came with a life organised around a hospital rota. I was tired of the night shifts, working through Christmas and asking permission to control my own time. I wanted freedom.
At the same time, laser treatments in Norway were extraordinarily expensive — sometimes travelling abroad for treatment could cost less. Looking back, this was the beginning of the owner method founder story for me: my husband helped me see that the frustration I was feeling and the opportunity in front of me might become a way out.
I thought opening my own clinic would finally give me freedom.
“You already have the solution. Why don’t you open your own clinic here?”
So I did.
I left the security of a public-sector job and opened my first laser clinic with enormous ambition — and almost no understanding of what running a business would actually demand from me.
The clinic grew. The bookings filled. From the outside, it looked as though I had made exactly the right decision.
But two years later, exhausted and carrying every part of the business myself, I found myself thinking:
“Did I really leave a secure job — the salary, the paid holidays, the benefits, the pension and the ability to plan my future — for this?”
01
I had left employment because I wanted more freedom.
The clinic was mine. But so was every task, every interruption and every problem.
WHAT I WANTED
I had not built
my freedom.
WHAT I HAD CREATED
I had built myself another job and I was the busiest employee in my own business —
only now, with no real rest and no paid holidays.
CHAPTER 03 · THE OPEN DOOR AND THE FIRST PROTOCOL
One evening, I went home after another exhausting day. The following morning, I arrived at the clinic and found the front door completely open.
Not unlocked. Open.
It was a small mistake with potentially enormous consequences — and another reminder that everything still depended on what I remembered to do.
My husband is a pilot. In aviation, important routines are not left to memory, however experienced the person may be. He asked me:
The idea that changed my clinic began with a door left completely open.
03
“Why don’t you create a closing protocol and checklist?”
So I wrote down every step required to close the clinic properly. Then he offered to test it.
I stayed at reception and watched him close my clinic using only the checklist. I did not teach him, correct him or step in. He followed the protocol and everything happened exactly as if I had done it myself.
My husband closed my clinic exactly as I would have — without needing my expertise, my experience, my memory or my physical presence.
- Lock the front door
- Switch off equipment
- Check treatment rooms
- Secure client information
- Complete the final walk-through
Of course, this was only a simple closing routine. It was not a treatment. It did not involve clinical judgement or caring for a client.
But it worked.
For the first time, I saw that a task could leave my head without losing my standard.
